The term for standards set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists in 1968. A term used by ACGIH to express the airborne concentration of a material to which nearly all workers can be exposed day after day without adverse effects. "Workers" means health individuals. The US government passed the National Environment Protection Act (NEPA) in 1970 to help protect the environment from public and private actions such as corporate pollution or excessive logging. The Environmental Quality Improvement Act as well as the Environmental Education Act and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are other measures taken by the federal government to ensure protection of the environment, and the quality of water and air.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Definition:
A compilation of information required under the OSHA Communication Standard on the identity of hazardous chemicals, health, and physical hazards, exposure limits, and precautions. Section 311 of SARA requires facilities to submit MSDSs under certain circumstances.

National Toxicology Program (NTP)

Definition:
NTP, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), coordinates the toxicology research being conducted within DHHS.

Acute

Definition:
Occurring over a short time, usually a few minutes or hours. An acute exposure can result in short term or long term health effects. An acute effect happens within a short time after exposure.
